While cleaning out my old travel golf bag, I found some forgotten score cards. They brought a smile with forgotten memories of days gone by. I’ve played Petrifying Springs a few times since 1976 because of the American Motors/Chrysler motor plant located nearby. This county course was home to one of the company golf leagues and favorite of Don H, my plant contact. The layout yardage is on the short side at 5,970yd/67.7/118 for this Par 37/34 straight forward layout. Starting out on #1 a 339yd downhill Par 4 has trees RH and western winds in your face. Number 2 is an uphill 239yd Par 4 with a very open green receiving your 2nd shot. The #3 continues downhill 385yds on a scattered tree lined fairway to a basic flat green. The first Par 3 is a 170yd tree framed fairway to a small protected front trap green. The greens on dogleg holes #6 at 330yd / #7 at 354yd are the only ones you can’t see from the tee box. The #8 Par 5 is a straight but narrow cut 495yd fairway that’s leads to a small green. The #9 is a Hcp 1 that has a 476yd uphill climb to a very small green and a pond in front. The Back 9 is cut downhill though a wooded area and is more closed in than the front. The #10 is a 303yd downwind Par 4 so watch that carry for being too close if that’s your weakness. Number 11 is another 339yd narrow downhill fairway with RH trees to a smaller green. The #12 is a shot 156yd Par 3 with a RH trap. The #13 / 388yd and #14 / 369yd are side by side Par 4’s with no real problems. The #16 Par 3 at 191yds is slightly uphill so play accordingly. Number 17 is Hcp 2 Par 4 because of its narrow 422yd length, into the western winds. Great Par 4 finishing hole is #18 with 431yds uphill and a hidden pond to catch those shot 2nd shots. Enjoyed shooting 43/38 w/35putts and Don H getting the best of me with 40/39 w/37 putts. Love playing historical courses with same type of interest.

Great Golf course conditions and lay out. Really a challenge to you short game with all the elevated greens. The two par 5 to finish the front 9 are an excellent way to get you set up for a great back 9. The last three holes will keep you coming back to try and conquer that challenge. Course was in excellent condition already.

Petrifying Springs Golf Course is absolutely one of my 'go to' courses in the area, a beautiful county course.

Funny, because you could say the clubhouse is pretty mundane (if you compare to privately held courses), but it has its beauty and significance: the course and the original clubhouse were built largely through funding from the (post-depression era) WPA. The clubhouse sits atop a decent-sized hill, so both nines start and finish with elevation change. Indeed, many other holes take advantage of topography, as you'll have a few good elevated tees and elevated greens, and a few interestingly pitched fairways.

While Pike Creek runs through the park, it mostly separates the course from the picnic grounds areas, so doesn't really come into play. Indeed, the only water on the course comes between #9 and #18, where a deep pit of a pond hides out of sight up the slope, and cuts each fairway by at least half on the approach to the green. (For most, it's not a concern on your tee shot, but look closely (before your second shot) for the stakes which mark its boundaries!) At least as big a concern can be mid/late afternoon play, as both #8 and #17 have you heading due West, hitting up a good rise, into the afternoon sun.

This course is especially beautiful to play in spring (when daffodils and other spring flowers are in full bloom) and in fall (when the view of surrounding woods in full color is wonderful).

This is a gem of a course. It's owned by the county and run by the county parks dept, which is rare. The course is beautiful. Set in rolling hills that border a county park. The course provides more than enough of a challenge for a duffer like me! Some of my better golfing friends tell me it's a nice sporting course that provides enough challenges to make it fun for them. The speed of play can be slow (esp. on weekends), but usually the offending group will let you play through. This course is worth a bit of a drive, especially in the fall when the colors are turning! Plus the area provides shopping for the non golfing members of the family. Kenosha, WI is located between Chicago, IL and Milwaukee, WI along I-94 making for easy access to either city.
